White Widow: the history of the strain
White Widow comes from the Netherlands. It was developed by the breeder Scott Blakey, known as Shantibaba, during his time at Green House Seeds. The parents are a Brazilian sativa and a South Indian indica. In 1995 White Widow won the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, and after that things moved fast: hardly any strain was crossed as often in the following years. The key facts are summarised in the Wikipedia article.
Why it is called White Widow
The name comes from its looks. The flowers are covered in so many trichomes, the tiny resin glands, that they look almost white. White like icing sugar, not green. Hence the "White".
White Widow strain: indica, sativa or hybrid?
Neither, or both. White Widow counts as a balanced hybrid because sativa and indica are represented roughly equally in its lineage. That makes it the textbook example of most strains today sitting somewhere in between. Why the split into indica and sativa says less than expected anyway is explained in the guide Indica and Sativa.
Aroma and taste: earthy, woody, slightly spicy
No fruit fireworks. White Widow tastes earthy and woody, with a spicy, slightly peppery note and a hint of lemon in the background. Some describe a touch of flowers. If you are looking for something sweet, this is not it. If you are looking for something that does not taste like candy, this is it.
The terpenes associated with White Widow are mainly myrcene, caryophyllene and pinene. Myrcene brings the earthiness, caryophyllene the spice, pinene the hint of forest. What these substances are is in the guide Terpenes.
